Linking SMS and email messages can boost open rates

Small businesses looking to bolster their email marketing campaigns should consider syncing their efforts with mobile. By adding SMS messaging to a business marketing strategy, firms can see higher open rates while simultaneously engaging with more consumers.

SMS boast a 97 percent open rate, and 87 percent of consumers open texts 15 minutes after receiving them, according to ClickZ. To boost consumers' interactions further, marketers should send out time-sensitive offers or messages that only a select group of consumers receive, which can make them feel like an insider. However, marketers must ensure that their messages are timed to be sent out an an optimized time.

"As with email, it is imperative to send only the most relevant SMS messages to your subscribers," Mike Hotz wrote for the source. "Stay focused on the best uses of mobile, such as time-sensitive information, location-related information or 'first to know' information that subscribers love to share with their networks."

With more consumers embracing mobile and preferring their smartphones to PCs, it is essential that marketers roll out strategic mobile marketing campaigns while continuing to apply more traditional tactics, as well.
